Story of Steve

Steve Hulbert was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. Attended the University of Utah and graduated with a degree in Business and Film Production in 1975. He then had the opportunity to go to work for the Penske Racing organization, C.A.R.T. (Championship Auto Racing Teams) and the S.C.C.A. (Sports Car Club of America) from 1976 to 1981. Over the next three years he worked in the retail automotive business while living in Laguna Beach and Menlo Park, CA. In 1985 he moved to Olympia,WA where he owned and operated the Pontiac, Cadillac and Saturn automotive dealerships. He has worked extensively with youth leadership, conservation and sustainability programs. Today, he lives in Aiken, SC with his beautiful wife Cathy, their horses Markus and Windhoek, along with the newest member of their family a brown Standard Poodle named Jackson Browne.

Steve Hulbert has frequently been recognized for his time and contributions in furthering environmental sustainability. He has served o­n the President’s Council o­n Sustainable Development Education Task Force; the US EPA Environmental Education Advisory Council; the Global Rivers Environmental Education Network as President, and o­n the White House Forum, "Education About the Environment" Steering Committee as a member of the board. Some important environmental and conservation awards he has received include: The Conservation Fund's, Alexander Calder Award; the Chevron/Times Mirror, National Conservation Award; the Washington Rivers Council, Leadership in Business Award; the Washington Department of Wildlife’s, Volunteer of the Year Award; the Association of Washington Business, Environmental Innovator Award; the Washington State, Environmental Excellence Award for Business and Industry; and the Trout Unlimited's, National Conservationist of the Year Award.

In the education field, Steve has served o­n the Huxley College Environment Associates Board and the Evergreen State College Masters of Environmental Studies Advisory Board. In 2004 he taught a course, "Designing:Sustainability" at Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. He also, sits o­n the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Our Future (FFOF) in Shelburne, VT, working in youth leadership and sustainability. In 2005 he was appointed by IUCN (The World Conservation Union) to its Commission o­n Education and Communication in Switzerland.  He also has passion for rare books and worked in the Antiquarian book store, Dragon Books in Bel-Air Califorina.  

Steve graduated cum laude from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s degree in University Studies, majoring in Film Production and Business. In 1996, Assisted "Education for Sustainability," Building Public-Private Partnerships, "An Agenda for Action".  In 2010 he published "Reflections" a book of photography, stories & verse.  Between 2000-2016 he produced & arranged six music CDs, "On the Road" – "Old Crow" - "Into the Night" - "Best of Steve Hulbert" - "Pieces of the Past" and "The Hawk."   He enjoys his family, horses, fishing, hiking, golf, and skiing.

In business most recently Steve was President of Hulbert Properties LLC, in Olympia, Washington. For over twenty years he owned and operated Hulbert Pontiac-Cadillac dealerships and later Saturn of Olympia. He has acted as business consultant to the General Motors Energy and Environment Staff, United Auto Group in Palm Beach, Florida, Penske Auto Center in Bakersfield, California and Capitol Chevrolet in Olympia Washington. Mr. Hulbert was a Race Management Consultant for Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) in Denver, Colorado, and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) in Atlanta, Georgia and Trenton, New Jersey. He was the Media and Public Relations Representative for Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan and the Penske Racing Team in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Steve has been an active, viable member of his community.  He has served o­n the Board of the Aiken Land Conservancy and the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare in Aiken, SC.  Previously he has served on the Boards of the Association of Washington Business, Wolf Haven International, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Olympia, Pacific Communications Cable Television Co., Thurston County Capitol Land Trust, Olympia Downtown Business Assocation, Salvation Army of Olympia and President of his local Home Owners Association & Water Company. Steve was President and Board member of GREEN (Global Rivers Environmental Education Network) working with Bill Stapp and General Motors. He served as a member o­f the Pontiac National Dealer Council, and has been president of the Thurston County Automobile Dealers Association.
